A MESSAGE TO THE PARENTS In 5th grade, your child’s academic strengths and weaknesses will come to light as the curriculum picks up speed in math, language arts, science, and social studies. It’s the year parents may review their child’s homework and wonder whether they themselves attended school in a different universe. In language arts, children will be improving their grammar and increasing their vocabulary. In social studies, they’ll create timelines, read maps and discover how we became the wonderful country we did. The real toughie for legions of 5th graders is math: multiplication, division, fractions, percents, probability, statistics, and geometry all come into play. More than anything, 5th grade is about the child taking control of his/her education, seeking help when he/she gets lost, and having the confidence to reach for more. This is also the time when distractions in the form of activities and a busy social life may keep your child from putting his/her best effort into her schoolwork.
In fifth grade you need to have a healthy balance.

Writing is a learned process of putting experiences into text. Writing allows a person to discover, develop, clarify and communicate his/her thoughts and feelings. Good writers aren’t born, they spend countless hours writing and rewriting until have created a finished piece they can be proud of. The fifth grade students will work to become effective communicators in both written and oral language.
Social Studies is defined as a course of study including geography, history, government, and sociology, taught in secondary and elementary schools, but it’s so much more than that. It’s looking at the lives of those who came before us who have shaped the world in which we live and create a blueprint for future generations.
Go Math emphasizes the application of mathematics to real world situations. Numbers, skills and mathematical concepts are not presented in isolation, but are linked to situations and contexts that are relevant to everyday lives. The curriculum also provides numerous suggestions for incorporating mathematics into daily classroom routines and other subject areas.Everyday Math lessons include time for whole-group instruction as well as small group, partner, or individual activities. These activities balance teacher-directed instruction with opportunities for open ended, hands-on explorations, long-term projects and on-going practice.
